TikTok Spark Ads Guide (2026): Authorization Codes, Specs and When to Use Them

Spark Ads is TikTok's native ad format for promoting organic TikTok posts — your own or a creator's — instead of uploading a standalone ad. The engagement earned while the post is boosted stays on the original post. This guide covers where the creative comes from, how authorization codes work, the specs, and the choices that cannot be undone.
What Spark Ads are, and what makes them different
TikTok's Business Help Center article "About Spark Ads" (last updated June 2026) defines Spark Ads as a native ad format that lets you leverage organic TikTok posts and their features in your advertising. The defining behaviour is attribution: all views, comments, shares, likes and follows gained from boosting the video during the promotion are attributed to your organic post.
That single property is what makes the format worth the extra setup. A standard in-feed ad ends when the budget ends. A Spark Ad leaves the engagement behind on a post that keeps living in your profile and in the algorithm afterwards — TikTok describes this as "lasting marketing impact beyond the campaign".
Spark Ads lets you do two distinct things:
- Publish ads using posts from your own TikTok account.
- Publish ads using organic posts made by other creators, with their authorization.
The second one is where most of the operational complexity sits, and it is the reason authorization codes exist.
Where the creative comes from: three sourcing routes
According to TikTok's "How to create Spark Ads for Manual and Search Campaigns in TikTok Ads Manager" article, you must first select a TikTok account as the identity for your Spark Ad. There are then three ways to source an authorized creative:
- Linked account. While creating the campaign, link a TikTok account — your own in-house organic account or a creator's — and select from the creatives available under your authorized identities.
- Video authorization code. A creator generates a code for a specific post and shares it with you.
- Push from Ads Manager. Push new posts from TikTok Ads Manager to a selected identity — a TikTok account authorized through TikTok Business Center.
Route 1 is the one to set up if the relationship is ongoing. TikTok's Business Center documentation on linking a TikTok account to ad accounts (updated April 2026) explains that linking makes the account usable as an ad delivery identity in Ads Manager, so it appears automatically during Spark Ads setup. Linking is done by a Business Center member with Admin access, under Accounts › TikTok accounts › View › Linked accounts.
Route 2 is the one to use for a single video from a creator you are not otherwise integrated with.
How a creator generates a Spark Ads authorization code
This is the part advertisers most often have to explain to a creator. TikTok's help documentation describes the flow from the creator's side, in the TikTok app:
- Make sure authorized posts are allowed in the creator's profile — via Settings and Privacy › Privacy, or Me › Creator tools.
- Open the post to be authorized and tap the three dots.
- Tap Ad settings.
- Agree to the Advertising Content Terms of Service.
- Turn on the Ad authorization toggle.
- Generate a video code.
- In the post's ad settings module, select the authorization duration: 7, 30, 60 or 365 days.
- Tap Copy Code and send it to the advertiser.
The duration choice is a real decision, not a formality. TikTok frames customizing authorization duration as a way to meet campaign needs and minimize costs. Pick a window that covers the flight plus a buffer; a code that expires mid-flight stops the ad, and a code far longer than the campaign gives away more than you paid for.
How to redeem a video code in TikTok Ads Manager
On the advertiser's side, the code is redeemed in the creative library before or during ad build:
- In TikTok Ads Manager, go to Tools.
- Under the Creative tab, click Creative library.
- Click Spark ads posts.
- Click Apply for Authorization.
- Paste the video code into the search bar and click Search.
- Review the post and click Confirm.
Two details worth planning around. First, TikTok supports batch authorization of up to 20 video codes at a time, so creator batches should be collected and submitted together rather than one at a time. Second, for videos made by two creators — Duets and Stitches — you need video authorization codes from both creators featured in the video; when the system confirms a dual-creator post, it asks for the code from the first creator's original post as well.
Inside the ad build itself, the pull flow is: in the Ad creatives section, click + Add videos or images, choose the TikTok posts tab, select the post, use Add post to authorize new posts, then complete ad details, destination and optional tracking, and publish. The push flow instead starts from the Your Library tab and asks you to connect a TikTok account so the ad has an identity.
If you are new to the surrounding workflow — objectives, ad groups, budgets and where each setting lives — our TikTok Ads Manager guide covers the three-level structure that Spark Ads plugs into.
Spark Ads vs non-Spark Ads: taps, profile traffic and metrics
The two formats behave differently under the user's thumb, and TikTok documents the difference precisely.

Non-Spark Ads |

So a Spark Ad deliberately routes some of your paid traffic to a profile rather than to your landing page. That is a feature if you want followers and brand depth, and a cost if every click needs to reach a product page. Decide which you are buying before you choose the format.
The reporting reflects the same split. For Spark Ads, TikTok reports paid clicks (clicks on the CTA button and ad caption), music clicks, paid likes, paid shares, paid followers, paid profile visits, paid comments, anchor clicks and anchor click rate. For non-Spark Ads, paid clicks cover the CTA button, ad caption, nickname, profile picture and swipe left, alongside paid likes, shares and comments. Comparing "clicks" across the two formats without noting that definition change is a reliable way to reach a wrong conclusion.
Specs and limits to check before you commit
From the specifications section of TikTok's "About Spark Ads" article:
- For organic videos from any TikTok account, there are no restrictions on video ratio, resolution, file type, duration, bitrate or file size.
- Separately, there is a 10 minute maximum on videos that can be sparked.
- Ad captions can be left blank. Account tagging, emoji and hashtags are allowed in captions.
- The ad's display name and text reflect the chosen organic post and cannot be edited during ad creation in TikTok Ads Manager.
- Organic posts that have been banned will also be rejected in TikTok Ads Manager.
- A video must be un-authorized as a Spark Ad before it can be deleted from the organic account.
- Each TikTok Ads Manager account supports a maximum of 10,000 Spark Ads.
Three more constraints appear in the creation guides: a post's caption cannot be edited after it has been authorized as an ad, so the caption must be final before you spark it; a private video becomes public once it is used in a campaign and its privacy status cannot be changed during promotion; and a video code can only be deleted once every ad using it has been deleted in Ads Manager.
Which objectives support Spark Ads
TikTok lists Spark Ads availability by buying type. Under the Auction buying type, the supported advertising objectives are Reach, Traffic, Video Views, Community interaction, App promotion, Conversions, Lead generation and Sales. Under Reach & Frequency, the supported objectives are Reach, Traffic and Video Views.
You are also not forced to choose format per ad group: TikTok's Smart+ documentation notes that Spark Ads and non-Spark Ads can be combined within the same ad group, and that creatives can be selected from multiple identities rather than a single TikTok identity at a time.
The mistakes that are expensive to undo
- Sparking a post with a non-final caption. It cannot be edited afterwards, and the ad carries the organic post's text.
- Requesting a 7-day authorization for a 30-day flight. The window is set by the creator at generation time, so a short code means going back and asking again.
- Treating profile taps as wasted clicks. On Spark Ads they are the format working as designed; your click target definitions have to change with it.
- Assuming you can delete the source video. It must be un-authorized first, and the video code itself outlives the ads until those ads are deleted.
Where the post-click side fits
Spark Ads changes what happens before and during the tap; it does not change what happens after. Whichever format you pick, the landing experience still has to survive review and still has to convert. If rejections rather than performance are your bottleneck, our TikTok ad approval playbook covers the common rejection reasons and the appeal path. For the routing and landing-page layer itself, DeepClick's post-click optimization for Meta and TikTok advertisers is built for exactly that half of the funnel.
FAQ
How do I get a TikTok Spark Ads code?
The creator generates it, not the advertiser. In the TikTok app they open the post, tap the three dots, tap Ad settings, agree to the Advertising Content Terms of Service, turn on the Ad authorization toggle, generate a video code, choose an authorization duration of 7, 30, 60 or 365 days, and tap Copy Code to share it.
What is the difference between Spark Ads and regular TikTok ads?
Spark Ads run from an existing organic post, so engagement earned during the promotion is attributed to that post, and taps on the profile photo, nickname or swipe-left go to the video owner's profile instead of your landing page. Regular in-feed ads send all of those taps to the landing page or app install page.
How long does a Spark Ads authorization last?
The creator selects the duration when generating the code: 7, 30, 60 or 365 days. Choose a window that covers your whole flight, because the setting lives on the creator's side.
Do Spark Ads cost more than normal TikTok ads?
TikTok's Help Center does not document a separate Spark Ads fee — Spark Ads run in the same auction and are governed by the same campaign and ad group budget minimums as other TikTok ads. Anything you pay a creator for the content or the authorization is a separate commercial arrangement, not a charge inside Ads Manager.
The short version
Spark Ads is worth the extra steps when you want the engagement to stick to a real post and when creator content outperforms your studio content. The workflow is: creator authorizes a post and picks a duration, you redeem the code under Tools › Creative library › Spark ads posts, then build the ad as normal. Get the caption and the authorization window right the first time — those are the two things you cannot fix later.
