TikTok Ads Creative Best Practices: Specs, Hooks, Refresh

TikTok ads creative best practices, per TikTok's own documentation: shoot vertical 9:16 at 720p or better with sound, land the hook in the first 6 seconds and the core proposition in 3, keep text and logos inside the UI safe zone, run 3–5 creatives per ad group, and refresh when delivery trends down.

This guide walks through each of those, separates the hard specs from the recommendations, and shows where Smart Creative and Creative Center fit. Everything below is taken from TikTok's Business Help Center and Creative Center; where TikTok does not publish a number, this article does not invent one.

TikTok ad creative specs vs best practices: know which is which

Most "TikTok ad specs" lists blur two different things: the minimum a file needs to be accepted, and what TikTok recommends for the ad to perform. They are not the same numbers.

According to TikTok's Business Help Center page for auction in-feed ads, a non-Spark video ad must meet these specs:

Spec

Requirement (non-Spark in-feed)

Aspect ratio

9:16 vertical (recommended), 16:9 horizontal, or 1:1 square

Minimum resolution

540×960 px (vertical), 960×540 px (horizontal), 640×640 px (square)

File formats

.mp4, .mov, .mpeg, .3gp, .avi

Duration

Up to 10 minutes

File size

500 MB or less

Bitrate

516 kbps or more

TikTok's creative best-practices article then sets a higher bar: orient vertically at 9:16 and shoot at least 720p. In other words, 540×960 is the floor for the upload to pass, and 720p is the level TikTok recommends you actually produce at. Treat the spec table as a gate and the best-practices article as the target.

Two caption rules also catch people out. Non-Spark ad captions do not support clickable links, @ mentions or hashtags, and the account name shows on one line with a limit of 20 characters in most languages (10 for Chinese, Japanese and Korean). If your concept depends on a hashtag challenge or an @ mention, that is a signal to look at TikTok Spark Ads, which run from a real organic post.

Hook first: the 6-second and 3-second rules

TikTok's own guidance gives two timing rules, and they answer different goals:

  • Hook in the first 6 seconds to lift engagement and watch time.
  • Introduce your content proposition in the first 3 seconds for better recall and awareness.

The practical reading: the first frame has to earn the next second, and the reason to care about your product should be on screen before most viewers decide whether to keep watching. A slow brand intro, a logo sting or a long establishing shot spends exactly the seconds TikTok says matter most.

Hook patterns that fit these rules without depending on a trend:

  • Start with the result, then show how you got there.
  • Open on the problem the viewer already has, stated in their words.
  • Lead with a person talking to camera, not a product shot on a plain background.
  • Put a short on-screen line in the first frame that tells the viewer what they are about to see.

TikTok also recommends a simple structure that sells: hook, then your unique selling points, then a clear call to action. Keep the CTA short and direct, and tell the viewer what to think, feel or do next.

Sound, text on screen and pacing

TikTok lists sound or music among the basics, not the extras. Silent product loops read like display ads dropped into a sound-on feed. For licensed tracks, TikTok points advertisers to its Commercial Music Library.

When you use on-screen text, TikTok recommends displaying 5 to 10 words per second. That number is a useful edit check: if a caption card carries 25 words, it needs to stay on screen for several seconds, which usually means the line is too long rather than the shot too short.

Pacing follows from the same logic. Cut on the beat of the message, not on a fixed interval, and make sure each new shot either adds a reason to believe or moves toward the CTA.

Stay inside the safe zone

The TikTok interface sits on top of your video: the caption, the account name, the CTA button and the right-hand icons all cover part of the frame. TikTok's help center puts it plainly: elements outside the safe zone may be covered or cropped.

What TikTok documents about the safe zone:

  • Its size depends on the ad's dimensions (vertical, horizontal or square), the length of your caption, and any additional formats or add-ons you use.
  • The longer the caption, the smaller the safe zone. A long ad caption pushes the usable area up.
  • Don't place text, logos or key messages where buttons, usernames and captions appear.
  • Use the downloadable safe-zone templates and the preview tool in Ads Manager before launch.

Because the safe zone moves with caption length, check it with the final caption, not a placeholder. A frame that was clean with a 5-word caption can lose its headline to a 3-line one.

How many creatives to run, and when to refresh

TikTok's recommendation is 3 to 5 different creatives per ad group. Its auction best-practices page states the same range from the other side: 3 to 5 ad versions per ad group. One creative gives the delivery system nothing to choose between; a dozen near-identical cuts spread the budget without teaching you anything.

"Different" should mean different concepts, not the same video with a new opening frame. Useful axes to vary:

Axis

Example variations

Hook

Result-first vs problem-first vs question

Presenter

Creator to camera vs voiceover vs no person

Proof

Demo vs testimonial vs before/after

Offer framing

Feature-led vs use-case-led

Length

Short cut vs full story

On refresh, TikTok is specific about the signal and deliberately vague about the calendar. It advises refreshing when delivery results show a consistently declining trend, or when daily new users are low, and it recommends adding new creatives to the existing ad group rather than creating a new ad group. TikTok also notes that fresh, engaging creatives are a top factor in how long an ad group stays healthy. There is no official "refresh every N days" rule, so don't build your process around one; build it around the trend line.

This matters structurally, too. Settings that decide delivery live at the ad group level, and some of them cannot be changed after launch. The TikTok Ads Manager guide covers which settings lock and why swapping creatives inside a stable ad group is usually cheaper than restarting.

Smart Creative: letting TikTok rotate for you

Smart Creative is TikTok's automated creative option. According to the Business Help Center, it combines your videos or images with text and CTAs, detects ad group fatigue, and auto-refreshes by pausing fatigued videos and bringing in fresh ones. While it evaluates new combinations, it monitors them for 3–5 days and allocates no more than 10% of the ad group's total budget to that exploration.

Know its boundaries before you rely on it:

  • It is available for Traffic, App Promotion, Conversion and Lead Generation objectives.
  • It runs on TikTok and Pangle placements.
  • It supports non-Spark ads and Spark Ads (pull only).
  • Split testing is not supported, so you cannot use Smart Creative and a formal split test to answer the same question at the same time.

Smart Creative handles rotation and fatigue; it does not replace having genuinely different concepts to rotate. Feed it variety along the axes above, and use a separate split test when you need a clean answer to one creative question.

Where to find ideas: Creative Center and Symphony

TikTok's Creative Center is a free, public hub for creative research. The pieces most useful for building ads:

  • Top Ads: a collection of high-performing creatives from the platform, useful for studying hooks and structure in your category.
  • Trends: trending hashtags and content, which help with TikTok's advice to lean into trends, memes and challenges where they fit the brand.
  • Symphony Creative Studio: TikTok's AI video generation tool, with Symphony Automation for generating, refreshing and resizing assets.

Use Top Ads to learn patterns, not to copy scripts. What transfers is the structure: how fast the hook lands, how the proof is shown, and how the CTA is framed.

After the tap: the part creative can't fix

A strong creative buys the tap; it does not guarantee what happens next. If the landing experience is slow, mismatched with the ad's promise, or keeps getting flagged in review, better videos only send more people into the same problem. Rejections are covered in our TikTok ad approval guide, and if you work with safe page and money page separation, the cloaking for TikTok and Facebook ads guide explains where the platform lines are. For the post-click layer itself, DeepClick's post-click optimization for Meta and TikTok advertisers is built for that half of the funnel.

FAQ

What are TikTok's recommended video ad specs?

TikTok recommends vertical 9:16 video shot at 720p or higher with sound. The minimum accepted resolution for a vertical non-Spark in-feed ad is 540×960 px, files can be up to 500 MB, and duration can be up to 10 minutes.

How long should the hook be in a TikTok ad?

TikTok advises putting your hook in the first 6 seconds to lift engagement and watch time, and introducing your core proposition in the first 3 seconds for better recall.

How many creatives should I put in one TikTok ad group?

TikTok recommends 3 to 5 different creatives per ad group. Make them different concepts, such as different hooks or proof styles, rather than minor edits of one video.

How often should I refresh TikTok ad creatives?

TikTok does not publish a fixed schedule. It recommends refreshing when delivery results show a consistently declining trend or when daily new users are low, and adding the new creatives to the existing ad group instead of building a new one.

The short version

Treat TikTok's spec sheet as the gate and its best-practices article as the target: 9:16, 720p or better, sound on, hook inside 6 seconds, proposition inside 3, text at 5–10 words per second, key elements inside a safe zone that shrinks as your caption grows. Run 3–5 genuinely different creatives per ad group, refresh on a declining trend rather than a calendar, and use Smart Creative for rotation while keeping split tests for clean answers.
